Schuerman - One of Sedona’s early settlers who started the first area winery:
Henry (Heinrich) Schuerman, a German immigrant who in the 1880s assumed land ownership on the banks of Sedona’s Oak Creek (now known as the Red Rock Loop), was the first to plant commercial grape vines. In time the Schuerman family's winery became prosperous, largely because of the burgeoning market offered by the Jerome mines where they would deliver wagon loads full of barrels. They also bottled their wine, and there are stories of local cowboys breaking away from the herd, making a run to the Schuerman place and taking bottles of wine back to their camp. Eventually the party was over due to prohibition, and it was 70 years before winemaking was attempted in the Verde Valley again. Schuerman descendants are still proud to call the area home, near a beautiful residential street, Schuerman Drive. A loop trail follows the parameter of Schuerman Mountain off Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Rated moderate at 3.5 miles with a elevation gain of almost 550 feet.
